The City of Eldorado admits to illegally gassing their shelter animals AND the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) knew about it and did NOTHING!

In a written response to my open records request, Eldorado City Secretary Carolyn Mayo wrote on April 20, 2010 "...I spoke with Mr. Fay's son Tony who is actually in charge of the facility. We have a chamber setup which utilizes carbon monoxide from a vehicle." Ms. Mayo went on to write "Ms. Kathy Parker (with the Texas DSHS) who inspected the facility has not followed up with information promised on her last visit so we can pursue another methods for euthanizing animals..."

Ms. Mayo is referring to the last inspection performed by the State on May 22, 2009 wherein Ms. Parker wrote under the inspection comments "Need to start using injectable euthanasia solution (no chamber). Dr. Kenneth Waldrop of the Texas DSHS signed the inspection form which states "As the inspector, I certify that I have personally inspected this facility and that it conforms to the statements above." In addition, Dr. Waldrop also signed off on the city's license the same day. The license noted that "Eldorado Animal Control Facility having complied with the provisions of Chapter 826, Health and Safety Code, and having been approved by Zoonosis Control, is hereby licensed..."

A complaint has been filed with the Schleicher County Attorney Raymond Loomis and the Texas DSHS! The ONLY two legal forms of euthanasia allowed in Texas are commercially compressed carbon monoxide and sodium pentobarbital (injection). SEE "LETTERS" tab AND "CONTACTS" tab
