Thanks to the City of Gainesville! According to a letter (11/23/11) from Admin Asst Susan Case the City of Gainesville is officially a NON-GASSING city! The portable carbon monoxide chamber is no longer being utilized.
On November 16, 2011 An email was sent to the City of Gainesville Secretary Kay Lunnon (klunnon@cogtx.org) as a follow-up. I asked about the current use of the gas chamber.
Here is the documentation I have on the City of Gainesville. Email dated April 15, 2010 from Admin Asst Susan Case states that the City does NOT have an animal shelter, but uses the Noah's Ark Animal Shelter in Gainesville. The attached word document (April 8, 2010) from Chief Steven Fleming refers to a memo regarding the use of compressed carbon dixoxide by animal control officers. Fleming notes "...police department animal control division only uses commerically compressedd carbon dioxide...purpose for euthanizing small wildlife species." I consider the City of Gainesville to be gassing because they DO gas animals that they take in. They have a chamber AND they use it. NON-gassing cities and counties have NO chamber on their property.
I may have contacted your shelter as part of this open records request and will check on that later today and report back here.
I serve on the Board of Directors for Noah's Ark SPCA/Humane Society, the animal shelter for Gainesville, Texas, and have for the past 4 years. Our shelter has NEVER gassed an animal. The City has in the past gassed rabid skunks that were caught by Animal Control but never a dog, cat or other domesticated animal and has it has discontinued its procedure for gassing skunks. The people who operate and work at our shelter do so because they love animals and they don't deserve to be slandered in this manner.
Audrey, Please give me a call or e-mail me. I am working on getting the gassing stopped at the El Campo shelter and would like to get together with you.
